About Me

I'm excited to share that my Watercolor Batik "Old Pickup in Blizzard was featured in the March/April 2024 issue of South Dakota Magazine!! This artwork also received an honorable mention in the 2023 Dakota Masterworks Senior Art Show.

I hope you enjoy my artwork as much as I enjoy creating it! The best times in my life are spent creating at the table!!

Most of the best moments and memories in my life involve creating around the table with myself, my mom and sister, and friends. I was born and raised in a small town in South Dakota and am glad to say I have moved back to my beloved prairie state!

Author Willa Cather shared

"Anyone can love the mountains,  it takes a soul to love the prairie."

I am a self created artist in many art mediums. I've taken lots of classes, taught classes, and have done lots and lots of experimenting! I enjoy watercolor, acrylic painting, nature crafts, weavin, paper crafts, beading, and culinary arts. I love trying new ideas and am willing to give any art medium a try! The difficultly is not liking everything I try!! Thanks to my mother and her encouragement from childhood I have been a life long learner of creative arts!

In fact the color tin at the top of my page is the actual

crayon tin at my childhood home!!

I've enjoyed doing commissions for people in the past few years. I received an honorable mention for water color in the Dakota Masterworks art show in 2021. The Dakota MasterWorks Art Show is a nationally recognized show for South Dakota people over age 60. One of my Rock Series painting was part of a juried member show at the Bloomington Center for the Arts in Bloomington MN. I also have exhibited at the Great Plains Watercolor Society Member Invitational in 2022.

My work can be found at Serendipity Studio and Gallery in Sioux Falls, SD, Q Jewelry in Mitchell, SD, Stage Stop Leather and Gift Shop in Hill City, and Claw, Antler and Hide in Custer, SD. You can also contact me to purchase orginals, prints or commission work.

An opportunity to be an Artist in Residence at Sylvan Lake Lodge in Custer State Park, South Dakota topped off my year! I spent 10 days painting at the lodge, interacting with guests and tourists and being inspired by the incredible surroundings which peaked in fall color while I was there! I also spent two weeks in 2023 the beginning of the summer as artist in residence as well

Most of my art is inspired by nature and the beauty that surrounds us in everyday life.

Connected Threads: Discovering Natures

Sculpture and Weaving by Julie Dent

I was honored to be selected as a Featured Artist for 2023 at the Brookings Art Council in Brookings, SD and had my nature weavings and rock weavings on display from Feb 22 through March 24, 2023.

I have added a category on my website  with the art that was featured at that exhibit plus the collaborative art project that people who attended the show during the month could add to!

It was a wonderful experience to be part of! As part of my exhibit I taught a workshop on nature weaving and it was such a success we added a second class!

Two of my watercolor paintings were selected to be part of the Packard Group National Exhibition 2022.

Selected artwork was professionally printed and wheatpasted to the exterior of No.7 Center Gallery in Vermillion, SD.
